history and maritime heritage, thereby furthering the status and

Objectives
- To advance public (especially Youth) understanding of
National and Local Maritime and Coastal History.
- To Promote interest in, and publicise the Brixham
element of Torbay's Geopark status.
- To encourage physical activity through the selection,
content and execution of Pirate Day Events.
- To promote the knowledge, understanding,
participation and care of the natural and built environment of Brixham.
- To re-establish and promote public awareness of
Brixham's
status and heritage as the UK's premier fishing port and ship building
innovator.
- To attract ongoing funding and revenue streams with
which to sustain Brixham Buccaneers.
Aims
- Regularly provide low cost, easily
accessible educational fun-days that
will attract both local and visiting families to learning through play.
The
primary vehicle will be a Pirate Day in Brixham every week during
school
holidays and the summer season.
- Pirate
Days will maximise synergies with other local groups and organizations
and will
normally be planned for Thursdays. Resident and Public participation
will be
encouraged such that Brixham will adopt the character of
“17th/18th century
Pirateville" each Thursday.
- Interest and education will be
provided through a rich and varied,
cross-generational programme to include crafts, workshops,
play, music,
drama and performance suitable for all age and ability groups.
- Brixham's
role and relevance to Maritime Britain will be emphasized using the
support of
the Heritage Fleet, Sea Scouts, Golden Hind museum, the Fishing
industry and
the MCA where-ever possible and appropriate, including hands-on public
participation. Coastal history, ancient and modern, will be
demonstrated and
investigated with the support of the Coast & Countryside Trust
(Geopark)
and the Fishcombe Battery Historical display group, both of which are
ideally
placed to also contribute to the active use and respect for both the
natural
and built environment.
- Wherever
possible, activities will be sourced from voluntary groups with costs
being covered by participant contributions, and activity groups being
reimbursed through mutual support and co-operative publicity.
- To trade whenever needed
to provide a sustainable financial future for Brixham Buccaneers.
- To forge partnerships with
other cultural organisations for the promotion and furtherance of
Brixham's cultural heritage.
- To promote Brixham
Buccaneers to other parts of the UK and further afield.
